Member of Parliament - Matthew Hancock MP |
| |
Matthew Hancock was
elected MP for West Suffolk on 6 May 2010. Before entering politics
he was an economist at the Bank of England and worked in his family
business. He is a member of the House of Commons Public Accounts
Committee.
Matthew Hancock, 31, is married to Martha and has a daughter and a
son. He was brought up in rural Cheshire, attended Farndon County
Primary School and King's School Chester. He holds a degree in
Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford and a Masters in
Economics from Cambridge .
He first worked for Border Business Systems, his family's computer
software company in Cheshire, and then for the Bank of England as an
economist from 2000 to 2005.
In 2005 George Osborne asked him to advise the Conservative Party on
economic policy. He worked for George Osborne and David Cameron,
rising to become Osborne's Chief of Staff, managing the Party's
Treasury Team, and advising on policy. He stepped down from that
role in February 2010 when he was selected as Conservative candidate
for West Suffolk.
Following his election in which he increased the Conservative
majority in West Suffolk, Hancock was elected by Conservative MPs to
be a Member of the Commons Public Accounts Committee.
In 2005 Hancock set out on foot to play the northernmost game of
cricket on record at the north pole. He didn't make it to the pole,
succumbing to frostbite on the Arctic Ocean, but he did succeed in
playing the most northerly recorded game of cricket. He retains all
of his fingers.

Proposed new housing developments
for Hundon
St Edmundsbury has to construct at
least 8,150 extra homes between now and 2031. It proposes to build
3,500 around Bury, 3,100 around Haverhill, and 1,600 in the surrounding
villages. Hundon has been designated as a Service Centre, in which
it is considered that ‘a limit of 10 houses per development
would be appropriate, although more than one site might be identified
in the village during the planning period.’ 3 sites (Click HERE to
see map) have been submitted for consideration by local landowners.
More details can be found on the St Edmundsbury website
Recycling
Government
figures released 23 Jan 2006 show St Edmundsbury Borough Council
is officially top of the league when it comes to recycling. Not
only are they at the very top, they are also the ONLY council
to have cracked the 50%mark!
However,
many people are still confused as to what should be put in which
bin; black, blue or brown. The Borough web site has produced
a guide which can be found by clicking HERE
Although
this chart is very helpful, it can still raise some questions.
If in doubt try emailing sort-it@stedsbc.gov.uk or waste.management@stedsbc.gov.uk. We
have just emailed the sort-it link with some questions and we
had a very fast response with a full explanation.
On
a more general note, www.recycling-guide.org.uk
emphasises the importance of recycling and provides advice on
how people can recycle at home, in schools and how to recycle
different materials. The guide also has a useful tips section
www.recycling-guide.org.uk/rrr.html and
is easy to follow due to the detailed illustrations.
Wheelie
Bins
If you need to replace your cracked or damaged wheelie bin, these
can be replaced free of charge by ringing the Council Waste Management
on 01284 757320
Battery Collection
and Recycling
St Edmundsbury
Borough Council have now started kerbside battery collection
trials that will run until March 2008. Local residents will receive
an explanatory letter instruction leaflet and battery bags to
hang on a special hook that will be attached to their blue bins
during w/c 23 July. The first collection will begin on 6 August.
All household
batteries, AAA, AA, C, D, button, laptop, mobile phone and rechargeable
batteries will be collected. Car batteries will not be collected
and these will need to be taken to the local household waste
recycling centre.
Shopmobility
has arrived in Haverhill
The Shopmobility
scheme loans electric scooters, powered chairs and manual wheelchairs
to anyone who may have difficulty walking around the town and
shops, and visiting the attractions. The scheme is based at the
Borough Council offices in Lower Downs Slade. Car parking spaces
can be booked in advance and the scheme operators, 3CT (3 Counties
Transport), can organise transport for those without a car. It
is open Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm.
Registration
is quick and simple – all that is needed are two items
of identification, preferably one with a photograph. An assistant
then gives training on the electric scooters and sets customers
on their way. The scheme has a £5 annual membership charge,
plus a £1 fee every time a scooter or wheelchair is hired.
Alternatively, there is a hire charge of £3.50 on each
occasion with no annual fee. St Edmundsbury Borough Council is
funding and managing the scheme along with 3CT, HAVO and Haverhill
Volunteer Centre, who are providing the day-to-day support.

Wildlife Project |
| |
In conjunction with the the Green
Light Trust and Hundon Primary School it is proposed to start a
community owned WildSpace in Hundon. This will involve the planting
of new woodland or the rejuvenation of an existing woodland. The
project will focus on four elements:
1 Children
2 Community spirit
3 Wildlife
4 Global kinshipTHE
first step on the road to creating a wildlife space in Hundon that
is managed and used by members of the community has taken place with
the planting of a tree at the village primary school.
The tree was planted in the
school’s grounds on Friday (September 24) by village resident and
author of numerous books about insects, Mike Chinnery, watched on by
parents, teachers, pupils and members of a newly formed committee
set up to establish what is currently called the ‘Woodland sand
Wildspace’ initiative.

Southleigh House |
| |
Welcome to the
Southleigh House
website. Southleigh House is a thatched property set in
grounds of approximately half an acre in the Suffolk village of
Hundon about three miles from Clare. The gardens are opened to
charity, both under the National Gardens Scheme and for other
charities.
The garden at Southleigh was
originally laid out in the 1970s but it is a garden under
development. It has been created entirely by the owners who
maintain the garden themselves.
The owners welcome visitors to the
garden on Open Days. The next formal openings are:
- Sunday 26 June 2011 (Hundon
Open Gardens): 2 - 5.30 p.m. Admission (to the 16 Hundon
gardens, two Hundon 'wildspaces' and the school allotment) is by
programme on the day obtainable from the Village Hall. Proceeds
to Macmillan Nurses and the village Youth Club.
- Sunday 3 July 2011 (National
Gardens Scheme): 10.30 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tickets available at the
gate. Proceeds to the NGS charities including Cancer Research
UK and Macmillan Cancer Support.
- Saturday 13 August 2011
(Busking Cancer: a musical charity event). Proceeds to Cancer
Research UK. Please see the
Busking for Cancer page for more information about this

and in the creation of the heritage of Clare. Clare web site
